Though drinking can be enjoyable there are many people out there wondering how to give up drinking. If you are one of those people then you are at the right place. I myself had a drinking problem and searched for a reasonable answer that would allow me to effectively put down the drink. If you are in the same place, I applaud you for my life since I stopped drinking has been much more productive and enjoyable. And, today, I can’t say I miss drinking since I gave up drinking alcohol.
The reasons why one might want to give up drinking are plentiful. Drinking will rob you of hours of your life that you could be using in a more productive way, not to mention the mornings sacrificed due to hangovers. For other people their drinking has gotten out of control. Drinking alcohol might have led to legal, interpersonal, or professional problems. If you are one of those people then you have a perfectly good reason for wanting to give up alcohol.
The first thing that you will have to do once you have decided to stop using alcohol is to decide how to quit drinking alcohol. There are a couple of different options available to you here. The first step is to identify the severity of your alcohol problem because your options will be different depending upon how often you drink.
If you believe yourself to be an alcoholic, that is a person who can not control the amount they drink (or the consequences) once they take that first drink, then you have a couple of options. The first thing you are going to want to consider is checking into an alcohol rehabilitation center. This becomes especially important if you drink so frequently that you have to be detoxed from alcohol. Remember, never try to detox yourself if you start with withdrawal symptoms such as DTs or seizures. You will need medical attention to ensure your health.
For those who don’t think that rehab is for them, there is always Alcoholics Anonymous which is a 75 year old fellowship of individuals who have collectively decided to stop drinking. You will be amazed how much you can learn of living without alcohol at these meetings. They can begin to show you the steps to take to stop drinking forever.
However, if you do not consider yourself an alcoholic and just want to stop drinking alcohol on your own you have a couple of different options. Again, if you are medical danger because of your drinking you will need to seek a medical detox to make certain that you do not seizure or have complications. Otherwise, let’s look at how one can give up drinking alcohol.
First things first, you will need to clean out your house removing all the alcohol that you may have. You won’t be able to keep alcohol in your house if you are serious about quitting because there will undoubtably be times where your resolve is weakened and you will be tempted to have a drink. Remember, out of sight, out of mind.
Next, you will probably need to assess your recreational activities. Does much of your leisure life revolve around drinking alcohol? It is likely that this is this case. In order to successfully give up drinking you will need to reassess how important these activities are to you. Is it worth it to you to find some new sober activities? Remember many of these new activities such as exercising, hiking, reading and joining an interest club are actually much healthier for you and your body than drinking alcohol ever was.
The other thing you will need in order to give up drinking, is some “reward” food that you can give yourself in a pinch. Alcohol is a sugar so many people when they first stop drinking find that it is helpful to have some chocolate or other candies on hand. You will find that eating a chocolate or two can mitigate the alcohol cravings that you may find yourself having from time to time. Even though this is not the healthiest solution, it can be a life saver for someone who wants to quit drinking.
So, those are the steps that I took to stop drinking. That’s the best answer to how to give up drinking.
